Cambridge B2 First

BSGS is committed to improving literacy and communication skills for foreign students to improve their employment prospects.  To achieve this, we provide preparation classes for the internationally recognised Cambridge B2 First Exam.  This course focuses on writing and grammar as well as speaking, listening and reading, using a variety of traditional resources. The course is for (upper) intermediate level students. Practical exercises are given such as writing letters, reports and articles, listening tests and role-play activities.

  • Part-time or full-time hours (eg. 4, 6, 10 or 20 hours per week).

  • Morning and evening classes (Mon to Fri; we are closed on Saturday/Sunday).

  • Flexible schedule (students can change hours any time according to their work rotas or personal commitments).

  • No registration fee! 

  • Minimum enrolment age is 18.

  • Each class consists of 2 lessons of 50 minutes with a 10 minute break in the middle, giving a total of 100 minutes of lesson time. For example, at 11a.m-1p.m, Lesson 1 begins at 11.05a.m and finishes at 11.55a.m. The break begins at 11.55a.m and finishes at 12.05p.m. Lesson 2 starts at 12.05p.m and finishes at 12.55p.m.

  • The maximum class size is 14 students, although usually it is much smaller.

  • The school is closed on Bank Holidays and all public, national holidays (although these days may be recouped later by students).

  • BSGS is also closed for approximately 2 weeks over the Christmas period.  Again, these days may be recouped by students at the end of their course.

Note:

* No books are required for this course as the teacher will provide all relevant materials such as print-outs and worksheets at no extra cost.  However, students may buy recommended books to further aid and support their learning.

* Exam fees are not included in the course price and need to be booked by the candidate independently as and when they are ready.  However, the teacher may advise them and guide them in this matter.  The exam fee is approximately £125.

* There are no specific course start/end dates as it is ongoing and continuous so students can join any day.

There are 4 parts to the exam:

  1. Reading & Use of English: understanding of texts e.g. articles; grammar and vocabulary - 75 mins (40% of overall mark)

  2. Writing: ability to compose 2 forms of writing e.g. letters (formal and informal), reports - 80 mins (20% of overall mark)

  3. Listening: comprehension of audio materials eg. news broadcasts and everyday dialogues - 40 mins (20% of mark)

  4. Speaking: ability to communicate orally in a pair or group discussion - 14 mins (20% of overall mark)

Pass grades: A, B, C.    Fail: D, E or U.

The exam can be taken most months in either paper-based or computer-based format. The paper-based test can be taken in March, May, June, August and December. The computer-based test can be taken in February, April, July, August and November. Not all test centres will offer both types of exam.  The Cambridge B2 First exam is set at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages.
