Foundation Degree (FdA) in Leadership and Management is awarded by the University of Hertfordshire, through their relationship with the UK Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). Successful completion of the two-year programme will lead to the award of the FdA Leadership and Management, together with two Extended Diplomas, one for each year, from ILM.
Foundation degrees are primarily designed for students as well as people who are in work environment so that new ideas can be taken back to their workplace in order to make an immediate and direct impact to the host organisation and the learner's job prospects.
This innovative new collaboration offers learners a unique dual qualification package - combining a professional qualification awards by Institute of Leadership and Management and a Foundation Degree from University of Hertfordshire.
While on the programme students will still keep their college identity [in terms of their UKBA sponsorship] but will also be considered a student of the University in terms of access to facilities and awards. In effect they will have full benefits such as a 24/7 remote access to their intranet and award-winning learning resources centre, giving you access to online text books, journals and databases or access online tutorials and study skills support.
This degree will be ideal for learners who want to progress in their careers and are beginning, or have aspirations to take on a more responsible role requiring leadership and management skills.
This innovative programme offers the opportunity for students in a number of sectors and industries to enhance their skills and develop their potential as leaders and managers. Students on this programme will be able to develop their leadership and management skills through work base learning and by implementing their knowledge within their employment or work experience context.
It can be undertaken by learners from a wide range of backgrounds but they will need to demonstrate the ability to benefit from the programme either by their academic qualifications or through relevant work experience.
Students who have successfully completed this programme will be able to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Management or other University Degree Courses such as the BA (Hons) in Business and Enterprise.
The programme is divided into six trimesters, each of 12 weeks duration. Students attend two days off job learning per week and are also expected to complete work-based learning projects. Each day covers four of the six themes for the programme, which are:
- Management (3 hours per week)
- People (2 hours per week)
- Finance (2 hours per week)
- Leadership (2 hours per week)
- Entrepreneurship and Marketing (1 hour per week)
- Work-based learning (Two x 2 hour off job sessions per week plus a minimum of five hours project work per week)
Students are expected to work within a weekly cycle, completing the following activities:
- Attend workshops
- Plan application of their learning within their work-based learning project
- Apply their learning through their work-based learning project
- Reflect on the learning and results achieved within their work-based learning project
Workshops themselves will contain a combination of presentations, case study work, group discussions and reflections and other activities, such as, for example, analysis of financial statements. Assessment will be continuous, through submission of weekly reflective diaries that contain assignments and reflections on achievements within project work. Students will also have access to University of Hertfordshire student support and the benefits of studying membership of ILM.
Students who do not complete the entire qualification may be eligible to achieve the ILM L4 Extended Diploma in Leadership and Management and / or certificates of credit against some of the units.
